Sweden is launching MIMER, one of 13 EU-funded AI Factories, hosted jointly by Linkoping University and RISE Research Institutes of Sweden. The initiative provides Swedish businesses with complimentary access to supercomputing infrastructure, AI expertise, and business support for startups and SMEs.
A Complete AI Innovation Framework
MIMER is designed as a one-stop shop for AI innovation, built on three integrated pillars:
- Develop - Access to high-performance computing for training and scaling models
- Test - Expert guidance from researchers and validation environments
- Deploy - Business development support to bring innovations to market
Organizations gain access to datasets, collaborative tools, training programs, and market development support.
Strategic Focus Areas
MIMER concentrates on four key domains where Sweden holds strength and growth potential:
- Gaming - Leveraging Sweden’s world-renowned game development industry
- Autonomous Systems - Building on automotive and robotics expertise
- Life Sciences - Supporting pharmaceutical and medical technology innovation
- Material Sciences - Advancing sustainable materials development
Infrastructure Foundation
MIMER builds upon existing Swedish infrastructure through NAISS (National Academic Infrastructure for Supercomputing in Sweden). Linkoping University leads research operations while RISE manages engagement with industry and public sector participants.
Regulatory Compliance Support
According to co-director Petra Dalunde: “Regulations on data and AI can feel daunting, but AI Factories help companies achieve compliance, ensuring scalable ethical innovation.”
The Name
The name MIMER comes from Nordic mythology. Mimir was the guardian of the well of wisdom beneath the world tree Yggdrasil. According to legend, drinking from Mimir’s well granted knowledge of the past, present, and future. This serves as a fitting metaphor for what the AI Factory aims to be for Sweden’s AI community.
