RISE’s Center for Applied AI serves as Sweden’s spearhead for AI innovation, coordinating the efforts of over 60 active AI researchers across more than 75 ongoing projects. Under the leadership of Sverker Janson, the center bridges cutting-edge research with practical applications.

Mission

The center works to strengthen, inspire, and accelerate AI initiatives both internally at RISE and externally in collaboration with the public sector and industry. It provides expert support for specific projects while serving as a coordinating resource to enhance AI integration across all of RISE.

Four Primary Work Areas

The center organizes its activities around four interconnected pillars:

1. Applied AI

Practical implementation of AI technologies in real-world settings, from healthcare to manufacturing.

2. Science of AI

Fundamental research advancing the state of the art in deep learning, NLP, computer vision, and Bayesian methods.

3. AI Transformation

Supporting organizations in adopting and scaling AI capabilities, including change management and skill development.

4. AI Policy

Engaging with governance frameworks, regulatory compliance, and ethical considerations including the EU AI Act.

The center provides multiple channels for AI knowledge sharing:

  • Scientific publications via the DIVA portal
  • Popular science articles for broader audiences
  • The “State of AI by RISE” newsletter
  • Learning Machines Seminars (weekly on Thursdays)

With 3,300 employees across RISE as a whole, the Center for Applied AI draws on expertise spanning virtually every industry sector. This breadth allows AI solutions to be developed with deep domain knowledge, ensuring practical relevance.

The center functions as a bridge - translating breakthrough research into solutions that industry can deploy, while feeding practical challenges back to guide research priorities. This two-way flow accelerates both innovation and adoption.
