Mimer: Sweden's AI Factory

A one-stop shop for AI with world-class compute, expertise, and business support

Sweden is entering the fast lane of European AI innovation. Mimer—one of 19 EU-funded AI Factories—is preparing for launch, hosted by Linköping University and RISE. Its mission: to give Swedish AI companies access to world-class compute, expertise, and business support, free of charge for startups and SMEs.

Part of the European AI Ecosystem

This initiative is central to the EU’s ambition to build a robust and interconnected AI ecosystem—one that accelerates innovation on European terms. Europe aims to secure digital sovereignty and ensure that AI development aligns with shared values, safety requirements, and legal frameworks.

Several key components shape this ecosystem:

  • European Digital Innovation Hubs (EDIHs) support companies in testing and adopting AI locally
  • Testing and Experimentation Facilities (TEFs) provide large-scale, real-world environments for AI and robotics testing
  • The AI-on-Demand Platform connects developers with tools, data, and expertise
  • AI Factories, such as Mimer, bring compute power, talent, and infrastructure together to scale innovation

Focus Areas

Mimer will support four strategic domains where Sweden has strong capabilities and growth potential:

  1. Gaming
  2. Autonomous Systems
  3. Life Sciences
  4. Material Sciences

These areas guide evaluation at EU level, but participation is open to all sectors.

A One-Stop Shop for AI Innovation

Mimer is designed as a complete “Develop–Test–Deploy” environment, supporting companies through every stage of the AI lifecycle. Startups and SMEs will access:

  • High-performance computing for training and scaling models
  • Hands-on AI expertise from researchers and engineers
  • Datasets, tools, and collaborative development environments
  • Workshops and training to build internal competence
  • Business development support to bring innovations to market
  • Guidance on ethical and responsible AI practices aligned with EU regulations

Large enterprises can also participate, at cost.

A Well of Knowledge

The name Mimer comes from Mímir, the guardian of the well of wisdom in Nordic mythology—a fitting metaphor for a national AI Factory designed to offer insight, foresight, and capability to those shaping Sweden’s AI future.
